You may be wondering….
Is there a device to stop dogs barking?
Short answer: Yes. Through our research we have found ultrasonic dog barking control devices to be the preferred choice. These can come in many forms, such as dog collars, hand-held or stand-alone devices. Below is a review of each of these.
In this article we aim to answer the question of what is the best device to stop a dog from barking.
First of all, to bark is natural for a dog. On the other hand, it’s also natural for you to want some peace and quiet. The trick is to train your dog to know that barking all the time (especially for no reason) is not necessary. This is where the ultrasonic no shock, no harm device can be very useful.
What is the best anti dog barking device?
Through our research we have concluded that the Instecho Anti Barking Device is the best device to deter a dog from barking.

Dog Barking Control Device Reviews:
Instecho Anti Barking Device
First on our list of anti-barking device reviews is the Instecho Anti Barking Device. This Ultrasonic anti barking device is first on the list not only for being durable and weather proof. It can also be used to deter not only your dog, but also your neighbour’s from barking.
The harmless ultrasonic sound can be adjusted to suit a range from small to large dogs. The adjustable ranges are also good when using indoors / outdoors. Low range for indoors and higher for outdoors (to cover a larger area).
How does it work?
Once a bark is detected via the internal microphone, it emits the sound. On the highest setting, the device can detect a bark up to 50 feet away. The dog then associates barking with the unpleasant sound. When the dog stops barking, the sound also stops.
It has a bird house shape and also comes with a handy rope, to hang it. This is a great feature, especially if you don’t want your furry friend playing with it!
The unit works with a 9v battery, which you can replace when needed. The nice thing is that it has an LED indicator to show when the battery has run flat. Unfortunately the battery does not ship with the unit.
We personally like this unit the best. Main reasons being durability and range.
- Durable and weather proof
- High range (can also be used on neighbour’s dog)
- Battery is not included
Lambow Mini Bark Control Device
The unit emits an ultrasonic frequency that is not heard by humans. Not only is it safe for the human ear, but according to the manufacturer also not harmful to dogs, other animals or plants.
Seeing as the sound is not audible to the human ear, you may be wondering how to test the unit.
There are 3 simple steps involved in testing it, they are:
- Dial the strength knob to “Test”
- Hold the unit about an arm’s length away from you
- Whistle towards the microphone
If the LED light flashes green and you can hear a beeping sound, the unit is in working order.
Similar to the Instecho device, it also has various signal strengths and a range of up to 50 feet.
The device has 3 effective levels:
- First level has a range of up to 15 feet (recommended for indoor use)
- Second level has a range of up to 30 feet
- Third level has a range of up to 50 feet
Something you should note though, is that the device does not work on deaf or hearing impaired dogs. The manufacturer also warns that some dogs may become desensitized when constantly hearing the sound. They recommend that only using the device when excessive barking occurs should solve this.
This should also extend the battery life of the unit. Apparently the battery is supposed to last up to 6 months (pending on use). Expecting it to last that long may be a bit hopeful, but looking at what others say – between 3 and 6 months can be expected.
Also the same as the Instecho device, it uses a 9v battery – which is not included.
Seeing as it has a similar use and there are many similar features between the two units I guess it comes down to personal aesthetics preference.
- Can be used on your own and your neighbour’s dog
- Variable strengths for the ultrasonic sound
- Can be used indoor and outdoor
- Weather proof
- Does not ship with a battery
Handheld Dog Repellent
This makes for a very good training tool. It can also be used to keep unwanted dogs away when walking or cycling.
It also doubles as a torch, which can be useful when walking your dog at night.
The unit has 3 settings:
- LED light (used as a torch)
- a setting for Training
- a setting for Stop Barking
It has a range of up to 65 feet, which is handy (pun intended!). The ultrasonic wave reaches frequencies of up to 125db, which is not audible for humans, but can be heard by able hearing dogs.
Although it has been rated safe for humans, it is probably a good idea to always keep the unit an arm’s length away when using it.
Our first instinct with this device is that it seems very aggressive. Apparently it has been rated safe for dog’s ears (other than irritating the dogs) and I suppose it could be used as a training tool.
To use it as a training tool:
- Give your verbal command
- Press the button (in training mode) for 2-3 seconds
- Repeat until your dog has learned
The ultrasonic device uses 1 9v Alkaline battery, which is conveniently shipped with the product.
The device also comes with a 1 month money back guarantee and has a life time of technical support.
- Very high range
- Can be used as a training tool
- First instinct was it looks aggressive, but with correct operation it isn’t
LOVATIC Dog Bark Collar
There are 7 settings for the audio (in the new chip) and it also has a sleep mode. The nice thing about the various settings, is that it can be customised according to your breed of dog. The sleep mode feature puts the device in sleep mode for a minute before activating.
The adjustable strap also suits most dogs between the 15 – 110 pound ranges.
The sleep mode is useful to save battery power. The device requires 3 lithium metal batteries, which are not shipped with it.
How does the device train your dog to stop barking?
With the first and second bark a warning sound is activated. After that the ultrasonic sound and vibrations are activated. This continues with intensity until the 7th bark.
The idea behind it all is that your dog associates barking with the irritating sound and vibration. A very nice feature of this device, is that it is not activated by other dogs barking, only the dog that wears the collar.
Being weather proof, your dog can wear it in and outdoors. It is recommended to have the collar fitting nice – not too loose and not too tight. Also try to not leave the collar on for more that 6 – 10 hours at a time.
One of the features we like most about this device is that it does not activate when other dogs are barking.
- Only activates when your dog barks (not when other dogs bark)
- Rain proof (helping you to train in any weather)
- Can be used on a range of dogs (small to large)
- Batteries are not included
DogRook Dog Bark Collar
This allows for a hassle-free way to teach your dog to stop barking.
The reflective nylon adjustable dog collar is suitable for a dogs that weigh between 11 and 110 pounds with a neck size of 9 – 22 inches. The collar is also water resistant.
How does it teach your dog to stop barking?
This collar is not a shock device, it uses vibration and sound (7 level settings) to train your pooch.
You can set the intensity level by using the + and – buttons (plus is more and minus less).
Once your dog starts barking, a warning beep sound will go off. After the second bark the vibration and sound will start. As your dog continues barking, the vibration and sound intensifies.
After the 7th bark, the device will go into sleep mode for one minute.
The goal is that after about 1 – 2 months, just seeing the collar will stop your dog from barking.
Some nice extras with the device is that it ships with 2 extra batteries and two different color covers. The latter is nice as a spare or even just a color preference. The colors are blue and orange.
It also ships with 2 types of plastic probes (for long haired and short haired dogs) to aid with the vibration.
The device beeps continuously when the battery is low, reminding you to replace it.
We think this is a nice and humane way to train your dog.
- Ignores barks from other dogs
- Good material (reflective nylon)
- Ships with extra cover and batteries
- Once the collar is off, some dogs will start barking (maybe not a bad thing at night as a warning)
ELZU.US Dog Bark Collar
How does the automatic mode work?
When in automatic mode, the dog collar will give a level 1 warning when your dog starts barking. If your dog continues to bark, the levels will increase through all 5. Once your dog stops barking for 30 seconds, the device resets.
The device has 2 training modes:
- Beep and vibration or
- Beep, vibration and shock
There is a digital display to show intensity and sensitivity.
The strap is adjustable to fit small to large size dogs. It is also IPX5 waterproof rated, which means you can walk or train your dog in the rain, without worrying about it.
Some people that have purchased it with smaller dogs have complained about the weight. Some have given it to friends with medium to large dogs who have used the device successfully.
If for whatever reason you are not satisfied with the device, it does come with a 30 day money back guarantee.
To be honest, none of us would get this device, as we are not fans of the shock feature at all. That being said, some people have said it’s the only thing that worked.
If you do decide to go for it, we would recommend not using the shock feature when you are not home (in case something goes wrong).
- Money back guarantee
- It comes with 3 extra batteries
- Shock feature
- Could be heavy for small dogs
Pop View Dog Bark Collar
The collar uses 7 progressive levels of sound and vibration. This means you can teach your dog, with the minimum required sound and vibration.
Being durable and adjustable, you can fit this collar on almost any size dog. The range of dogs that this device is rated for starts from 11 to 120 lbs.
The material used for the collar is nylon. This means it is suitable for all types of weather, including regions with high humidity.
The dual edges buckle ensures that the buckle stays in place. The round edges also prevents it from chafing your friend.
In the package you’ll also receive prongs. These are used for short haired or long haired dogs, so that they can feel the vibration.
How does this device stop your dog from barking?
Vibrations are detected once your dog starts barking. Once the device receives these vibrations, it gives an audible warning sound. That is followed by vibrations if your dog continues to bark.
Your dog then associates barking with this process and eventually will stop barking for no reason.
The purpose of this buyer’s guide is to help you make an informed decision of the best solution for you. Whether you are looking to control the barking of your own dog or others (or both), there are a few things to consider.

Does ultrasonic bark control devices hurt dogs?
This is highly unlikely. The idea behind ultrasonic devices is not to hurt or scare your dog. Rather it is to get them to associate barking with an irritating sound. This deters them from uncontrollable barking for no apparent reason.
What to look for in a barking control device
Type of device
Ultrasonic devices as opposed to some of the other solutions, are our preference.
The reasons for that are when looking at vibrations – it may not be very effective when you have dogs with long hair (although most devices have long prongs to overcome this).
Shocking your dog is also not something any of us would consider as a choice.
A device that will not hurt your dog
The idea behind looking at one of these solutions are to train your dog to stop barking – not to punish it.
During our research we found a case where a woman had put a shock collar on her dog. Something went wrong and the dog apparently yelped in extreme pain / discomfort.
Luckily she was there to remove the collar.
Do you want to control the barking of your own dog or other dogs?
If you want to control the barking of your own dog, any of the devices (collar, hand-held our stand-alone) should suffice.
The nice thing about the collars are that they work off vibrations from your dog, so don’t get activated when other dogs are barking.
For other dogs, either the hand-held or stand-alone should work – depending on the circumstance.
Hand-held is good for a deterrent when walking or cycling.
Stand-alone is a good option when looking at keeping the peace and quiet at home from either your own dog or others (i.e. neighbour’s).
Comfort and durability
This mainly pertains to the dog collars. Although your pooch is not going to be wearing this device all the time, it still makes sense to keep them as comfortable as possible.
A lot of the devices have kept a wide range of dogs in mind through collar size. Something else to consider is the weight of the device – especially if you have a really small dog.
When looking for a bark control device, there are a few options available. Most are fit for purpose and the best one for you depends on what you would like to use it for.
